The song was written by Janice-Marie Johnson and Perry Kibble of the R&B band A Taste of Honey. They released it in 1978 as a single backed with “World Spin.” It was also a track on their 1978 debut album titled A Taste of Honey. The song charted internationally. It was #1 on the U.S Billboard Hot 10, Hot Soul Singles, Hot Disco Singles and the U.S> Cash Box Top 100. It went to #1 in Canada, #2 in New Zealand, #3 in the U.K. and #18 in Australia. It is one of the most recognizable disco songs of the era. You have to “listen to the music and let your body flow.” Get up and boogie!! On the track were Hazel P. Payne, Janice M. Johnson, Perry L Kibble, and Donald R. Johnson.
The song has been used in commercials (Burger King) and Rold Gold Pretzels), TV shows (Nip/Tuck and Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil), and films (At Close Range, Barcelona, Mystery Men). It’s been covered by GQ and Brooke Valentine and sampled by Double and YUNG BAE.
