The Doobie Brothers’ Listen to the Music

The Doobie Brothers Toulouse Street album cover

Rock Music

The song  “Listen to the Music” was written by band member Tom Johnston was a call for world peace. The inspiration for the song was the idea that the leaders of the world would get together on a grassy hill, perhaps get high or perhaps not, and sit down to” just listen to the music” and forget all the conflicts. The song was the first big hit for The Doobie Brothers. It was released as a single (with “Toulouse Street” on the B-Side, and the song was the first track on their 1972 album Toulouse Street. The song went to #11 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #3 in Canada, and #7 in The Netherlands.

The Doobie Brothers formed in San Jose, California, in 1970, and have been recording, touring, and performing, for the most part, ever since. Membership has changed over the years, of course. Personnel for this song were Tom Johnston (guitars, vocals), Patrick Simmons (guitars, flute, vocals), Tiran Porter (bass, vocals), John Hartman (drums, percussion), and Michael Hossack (drums).

Here are the lyrics to “Listen to the Music” by The Doobie Brothers:

“Don’t you feel it growin, day by day
People gettin’ ready for the news
Some are happy, some are sad
gonna let the music play

What the people need is a way to make them smile
It ain’t so hard to do if you know how
Gotta get a message, get it on through
Oh now Mama gonna get that after a while

Oh, listen to the music
Oh, listen to the music
Oh, listen to the music
All the time
Yeah, ooh

Well I know you know better, everything I say
Meet me in the country for a day
We’ll be happy and we’ll dance
Oh we’ll  gonna dance our blues away

And if I’m feelin’ good to you baby and you’re good to me
There ain’t nothin’ we can’t do or say
Feelin’ good, feeling fine
Oh  baby let the music play

Oh, listen to the music
Oh, listen to the music
Oh, listen to the music
All the time

Like a lazy flowing river surrounding castles in the sky
And the crowd is growing bigger
And they’re listenin’ for the happy sounds
And I got to let them fly

Oh, listen to the music
Oh, listen to the music
Oh, listen to the music
All the time

Oh, listen to the music
Oh, listen to the music
Oh, listen to the music
All the time

Oh, listen to the music
Oh, listen to the music
Oh, listen to the music
All the time

Oh, listen to the music
Oh, listen to the music
Oh, listen to the music
All the time

Oh, listen to the music
Oh, listen to the music
Oh, listen to the music
All the time”
