Rock Music
The song “Listen to the Music” was written by band member Tom Johnston was a call for world peace. The inspiration for the song was the idea that the leaders of the world would get together on a grassy hill, perhaps get high or perhaps not, and sit down to” just listen to the music” and forget all the conflicts. The song was the first big hit for The Doobie Brothers. It was released as a single (with “Toulouse Street” on the B-Side, and the song was the first track on their 1972 album Toulouse Street. The song went to #11 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #3 in Canada, and #7 in The Netherlands.
The Doobie Brothers formed in San Jose, California, in 1970, and have been recording, touring, and performing, for the most part, ever since. Membership has changed over the years, of course. Personnel for this song were Tom Johnston (guitars, vocals), Patrick Simmons (guitars, flute, vocals), Tiran Porter (bass, vocals), John Hartman (drums, percussion), and Michael Hossack (drums).
